Owning the Nokia N97 – Part 11 – The Ovi rip-off

UK residents have recently been exposed to some very iPhone-esq “There’s an app for that” advertising from Nokia promoting the Ovi store. Except the only application that I’ve seen advertised is Gravity, a twitter client.

Being a recent signup to the twittering classes I’m still playing about with various twitter applications on my N97, so it was kind of nice to know of another one.

So off I go to the Ovi store… A search for “twitter” produced “Gravity – 10 day trail”… Oh, no mention of this in the advert, or maybe there was some small print on the bottom of the screen only visible on a 1080P HD broadcast. I wondered how much. £8! That’s a bit steep for a twitter client, it’s not exactly a complicated protocol, and I already had 3 applications that could do it on my N97 which cost a grand total of £0 (tweets60, Fring and Nimbuzz).

I decided to have a look at exactly what this £8 application could provide that the others couldn’t. As Ovi is particularly crap at giving detailed information on applications, I did a little google for the author and ended up on their main site. You can buy it direct from there too (don’t forget you’re a Nokia owner, not an iPhone owner who is tied into one source!)… Guess what… £6.05!

Funny value, probably due to a currency converstion, but even allowing for a little fluctuation, it still won’t come close to the Ovi store’s £8.

I guess you the Ovi store customer are paying rather directly for the advert!

So let this be a warning, just because it’s in the Ovi store, it doesn’t mean you have to purchase it from there. Use the freedom of not being an Apple drone, and have a look for other sources, it could save you more than a few pennies.

Just found some interesting info for the whole debate of N97 V iphone

    http://www.carphonewarehouse.com/mobiles/compare

it compares the 2 phones only problem is some info is incorrect like it says n97 has no wi fi etc, but if most stuff are true then iphones don’t have speakerphone :s

don’t know the last time this was updated but the last time i was on hear was august 2009 the same time i got n97 on contract n im afraid i’ve got a confession…
i have given up on the phone its lasted me 6months until i couldn’t take it any more, to many bugs, freezes and the biggest fault that is compulsive with a phone is it needs to be reliable!
i’ve always had to keep checking 4 updates so the phones always bin up2 date so after i sold the handset (£100 con!) i had to have the best mobile phone ther is iphone 3gs! n wats ironic is hw i was one of those haters hu knows all the things better on n97 bt all those things dnt matter if the phone doesn’t respond (by the way the 3mp camera is very sharp)

needed to share that as i did fall in love with the n97 for the first 2months and was wondering if anyone else has had problems wit ther n97?

    Hi Mike,
Sorry to hear you have gone to the dark side…. ;-)
From just playing with them the iPhones annoy me too much for me to ever buy one… My N97 always worked fine as a phone, it was things like the music player that used to drive me insane.
Unfortunately just after I worked out what was causing all the problems it met an unfortunate accident involving a Landrover wheel and I ended up back with my N95.
I forgot how sorted the N95 was, and have only just got round to fixing the N97. Only needed to replace the LCD panel. £34.99. Could do with a few cosmetic replacements, but I quite like the battered look!

The reason the 3mp camera on the iPhone looks so sharp is it does a load of sharpening in software, a bit too much for my liking.

the music player pissd me off too, ended up downloading software to put music from my itunes onto my n97 i just couldnt get along with ovi!!

but now its all itunes, n the music player is very nice just like the ipod touch, n if u do listen to alot of music then u’ll like the headphones as it has voice command to dial n once done calling u jst click the headphones buttom n it’ll just play were you left off even if u’v unplug the headphones n then re-pluggd them.

the iphone just runs smoother overall i never have to worry wen its gonna play up, hey maybe thats just me who enjoy the finer things in life :P
